About Mercy

Our History

For more than 135 years, Mercy Catholic College Chatswood has been shaping the lives of young women through faith, learning and opportunity.

Our story began with the vision of Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, whose belief in the transformative power of education continues to inspire us today. Guided by her enduring call to “Strive for Better Things”, Mercy education has always sought to empower young women with the knowledge, confidence and compassion to make a meaningful difference in the world.

In 1890, as the newly established railway transformed Chatswood from a small rural settlement into a growing community, the first Catholic school opened on Archer Street. The arrival of the Sisters of Mercy soon followed, bringing with them a commitment to educational excellence, faith formation and care for others.

In 1905, St Catherine’s High School was established, providing young women with access to secondary education at a time when such opportunities were uncommon. What began as a small school quickly grew into a thriving learning community, united by a shared belief in the potential of every young woman.

For generations, the Sisters of Mercy nurtured students to become confident, capable and compassionate leaders. Their legacy remains deeply embedded in the life of the College, shaping our culture, values and mission.

Today, Mercy is a vibrant Catholic secondary school for girls and part of Catholic Schools Broken Bay. While our learning environments have evolved and our community has grown, the heart of Mercy remains unchanged.
